Compelling main character and excellent presentation. Pros:Interesting takes on both first and third person combat, with plenty of freedom in how you pursue your missions. In Short:Excellent platform/shooter hybrid, whose engrossing narrative and well-realised game world deserves to be appreciated by a much wider audience. You could argue the combat is shallow compared to dedicated shooters but it’s not as if the game has to rely on only that for its appeal.We’ve had many great remakes this year but although this is probably the least famous of the games to get the HD treatment that doesn’t stop it from being one of the best. Without wishing to spoil anything the open-ended Wild West theme is all but abandoned by the end of the game, as the story rushes to a genuinely unexpected conclusion.Thereâs little to criticise in the game, except that the controls in the third person view can seem imprecise at times and the difficulty curve is a tad uneven. The key, as always, is a consistent art design and the mix of realistic landscapes with anthropomorphic characters works far better than it probably sounds.Stranger’s Wrath’s secret weapon though is its story, and a number of surprising plot twists that paint the furry Clint Eastwood wannabe a surprisingly deep and well-rounded character. As a result, and given it was always one of the most attractive games of the last generation, this still looks better than many retail games today.

Truly this game has had abominable luck no matter what the format.)Everything runs at a super smooth 60 frames per second too and both the character models and textures have been improved from the original.

After all the complaints over technical problems and the long wait for a patch we’re glad we saved ourselves the trouble, especially as this new PlayStation Network version seems to work without issue.(There is no Xbox Live Arcade version planned, after Microsoft started complaining that the file size was too big – as unconvincing as that complaint always seemed. Thereâs also a subtle amount of freedom to how you tackle any given mission, the most interesting tactic being to slowly chip away at your targetâs cadre of men using simple stealth tactics.The PC version of this HD release came out almost exactly a year ago, but we managed to miss it in last year’s Christmas rush. The unusual ammo for your crossbow is one of the most obvious throwbacks to the earlier games but having to purposefully go and hunt for the more exotic types is an interesting and welcome addition to the game.Youâve got the Chippunk who distracts enemies, the Thudslug for knocking them out (live bounties bring in more cash) and the Fuzzle which acts as a sort of furry landmine.You can have two kinds of ammo loaded in your crossbow at once, which adds an extra tactical edge to proceedings.

The third person is used for platform jumping, chatting and fisticuffs, whereas the first person view is for shooting your rather strange crossbow.Strange because it doesnât use ordinary ammo but a series of purposefully wacky, often quite garrulous, animals. Stranger’s Wrath is a first and third person action adventure, with the emphasis very much on the action – as you take on the role of a furry-faced bounty hunter in a faux Wild West.Having both first and third person combat is usually a bad sign in most games, a clue that the developer couldn’t work out which was best, but here it works very well. Especially given EA’s low key and unconvincing marketing campaign.It really is a travesty that the game isnât better known, as it remains one of the most enjoyable platform shooter hybrids of the modern era.Although this game shares some of the same creatures and the same oddball sense of humour, it has virtually nothing else in common with the earlier Oddworld titles. But back then, in 2005, it was almost impossible to sell anything on the console that didnât directly appeal to adolescent (in body or soul) gamers.

Even if ironically the best game in the series is also the poorest seller.Itâs hard to understand why the game fared so poorly on the original Xbox. Stranger’s Wrath though, that’s something entirely different. Or at least we never liked them back when they were were 2D platformers shamelessly ripping off Flashback. We’re almost worried to admit it, knowing how passionate its fans get, but we never really liked the Oddword games. Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD (PS3) – oddly beautiful
